During the Depression years, when silver-buying clients were scarce, many silversmiths went out of business. In 1934 Walter Gerlach and Hans Grag survived by setting up Cellini-Craft and creating a line of modestly-priced hand wrought aluminum items they named Argental (from the French word for silver).
Advertised as "new, lightweight, silver-like, non-tarnishing, strong as steel but entirely hand wrought,"
Argental
was stylish but inexpensive—an important factor during the Great Depression, when few could afford to purchase costly sterling silver tableware.
