    Description

Offered for your consideration is a vintage
    PARKER
    Model
    51
fountain pen, USA-manufactured in 1946.  This PARKER 51 was made at PARKER’s second Janesville, Wisconsin factory that was opened to meet the huge post-War demand for the pen.  It shows the
    “T” imprint
for this second factory (formerly a tractor plant, hence the T) next to a “6” (with no dots) indicating fourth quarter of 1946.  The entire barrel imprint is faint, but you should be able to see this production code in the image directly below.
This 51 features the lustraloy metal alloy cap with gold-plated clip over India Black plastic barrel and Vacumatic filler system (known by collectors as the MKI model).
So, please have take a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this capable PARKER fountain pen should join your collection.
As you probably know, the Model 51, designed in 1939, was named in recognition of PARKER’s 51st anniversary and production began the following year.  Manufactured for some 30 years in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, the 51 was PARKER’s most successful pen and is often referred to as the best-selling fountain pen of all time!
This PARKER 51 is in clean, good to very good condition.  It measures 5⅜” long with cap in place (a full 6” with cap posted atop) x ½” at widest not including the tasteful arrow clip with blue jewel which rests tight against the cap and has very little if any tarnish.  Plus, the lustraloy cap has no true scratches, just a few tiny dings and plenty of light usage and desktop scuffs from the years.  Also, the plastic barrel has no cracks but also shows the same level of faint scuffing.  Plus, the pearl-colored end jewel is in great shape, the cap to barrel press-fit is tight, and the “blind cap” screws into the barrel securely.  This pen was built to last by American craftsmen, and last it has.  Overall, it’s quite well preserved.
Most importantly, the hooded 14K solid gold nib is also in great shape with no ding or splitting.  It looks to be fine point but is not visibly marked.  Plus, the plunger button has smooth action.
I gave the pen a thorough rinsing in cool water to free most of the decades-old residual ink from the nib, feed, diaphragm, and cap.  After filling it sparsely with PARKER Superchrome black ink, the pen is writing but feels a bit scratchy; the platinum-alloy tip on the gold nib may be worn?  Also, I’m not sure that the mechanism pulls in as much ink as it could when new; it is 75 years old, after all.  Lastly, as with other Vacumatic 51’s that I’ve owned over the years, it has excellent balance, ample mass, and feels great in the hand.  It will be a very nice pen for some lucky buyer!
As pictured and described, this PARKER 51 Vacumatic fountain pen is offered at a competitive price.
