Antique 19th Century Lidded Wooden Storage, Trinket or Tobacco Box,
Rajasthan, India
Unmarked. Earlier owner left the original vendor's label on the bottom. It reads, "Tobacco Box, Rajasthan, 19th."
We cannot confirm the maker, origin or date of this box, but from the aged look and feel of it, the label is most likely accurate in that it's 19th century. Winner accepts there is no COA or ID confirmation.
Body is round with a flared foot with hand hewn markings inside and out
Lid is slightly domed, topped with a small knob, and has a lip that fits over the top rim of the base.
The wood is a light brown with a mahogany-red painted lid and base, and a black foot and center band.
Bands around the top of the lid may have been painted black originally, but are now tan.
The surface retains some of the original gloss or polish
The black band around the foot is decoratively textured with carved hatch marks
There is an aged metal loop on the side that extends to the inside and attaches with prongs
The bottom looks hand hewn and has some texture of the original wood and additional texture from age. The bottom's center is raised some so when sitting on a flat surface it will twirl and/or wobble slightly when pushed on.
Measures 5" high with the knobbed lid and 3" high without the lid. The opening is 4 1/2" in diameter and the base is 5 1/4" in diameter.
Weighs 15 ounces before packaging
Makes a beautiful presentation and is in good, pre-owned, antique condition. Colors are richer than photos show. There is no obvious odor. Adding to the antique charm of this piece are several edge chips, surface and paint cracks and paint chips than have occurred over time. There is an obvious thin crack on one side of the lid and down the side of the base. Please see photos. You can expect to see wear as well as signs of handcrafting.
Comes as found and as is and has not been cleaned.
