    Description
This Burgundy Pearl Vacumatic Long Major has been fully restored - a new Vac sac/diaphragm (and tested), and thoroughly cleaned and polished - I cleaned the components ultrasonically, then cleaned and polished them by hand. The components on this pen are Vintage. The Speedline filling unit operates smoothly and looks excellent. The barrel imprint is nice and crisp - very easy to read with an '8' date code, so 4th quarter of 1938. Parker retired this model of Vacumatic in 1948 in the US and 1953 in Canada. This Vac is U.S.A. made with a 1942 Canadian made 'F' nib.
This 1938 Vac has a beautiful and proper Parker Arrow 14K Solid Gold nib. I'd judge the nib to be about a 'F' point and quite stiff. There is some line variation between vertical and horizontal lines, like you would expect from a Stub nib. The date code on the nib is '.2.', so 4th quarter of 1942 - most likely a replacement nib.
This nib glides over the paper very smoothly. Parker made very high quality nibs - a great design complimented by excellent craftsmanship.
The trim is Gold filled and looks to be brass free - really stunning for a pen that is just over 82 years old! The single wide cap band is nice and tight on the cap and really dresses up this pen. It has a monogram panel but it hasn't been used. The Parker Split Arrow clip looks excellent and is tight on the cap as well. The split arrow clip design was introduced by Parker in 1937. The Blue Diamond was added in 1938 indicating a Lifetime Warranty. The paint has worn off some on the diamond. If you win the auction, just let me know if you want it touched up - no charge.
The Burgundy striped cap jewels are gorgeous - no blemishes at all. The cap, blind cap and barrel have just a few tiny scratches - from years of normal use and I'm just not seeing any noticeable blemishes at all - no teeth marks either. There is a monogram on the cap - 'ABR' - tastefully done. This Vac has very good barrel transparency. This Burgundy Pearl Vac has a wonderful sheen to it - looks about new!
Parker made the Vacumatic in many sizes, both length and girth - typically the most common were the Debutante (smallest), Standard, Major, and Over-sized (later changed to the Maxima). This one is a Long Major, and measures just over 5 1/4 inches capped and about 6 1/8 inches with the cap posted. The next generation major was about 5 inches long with the cap on, so about a 1/4" shorter.
I've included a writing sample using this pen. I tested the pen with water to assure it filled properly and then dipped the pen to create the writing sample. It lays down about a 'F' line, quite stiff and also extremely smooth. Parker USA nibs were normally quite stiff.
BTW, if you are relatively new to the Parker Vacumatic filling system (used in Parker 51's, Vacumatics, later model Duofolds, etc.) for maximum fill, depress the filling plunger about 8 - 10 times, with just a brief pause between plunges. This will assure a maximum fill. This new filling system design allowed the Vac to hold about 103% more ink compared to competitor's filling systems per Parker marketing materials.
If you are looking for a daily 'F' writer, or a stunning Parker Burgundy Pearl Double Jeweled Vac to add to your collection, then put this pen on your short list. The sheen on this Vac is about as good as it gets, and a pen of this quality doesn't show up very often.
